The massacre at St. Peter’s Field in Manchester on 16th August 1819, when a peaceful meeting for democratic reform was suppressed by force, was a significant event in the history of British popular radicalism. It precipitated the decline of the ‘mass platform’ movement which had grown after the end of the Napoleonic Wars and galvanized the last acts of an ultra-radical revolutionary fringe. ‘Peterloo’, as it became known, also had repercussions in a wider European, colonial and international framework, crystalising, as it did, questions of freedom, domination and representation. This volume brings together a collection of new and diverse approaches to this period, and broadly seeks to understand some of the wider implications of Peterloo and its aftermath, as well as question anew its domestic significance over the course of 1819 and 1820.
The aim of this volume is to consider animal love in its multiplicity, from a philosophical, environmental, scientific, aesthetic and literary angle at the same time, by inscribing the theme in the wider relationship of humans with the world. Animal love is not some phrase for idealists of sweet dreamers. It is the core of a society of change that shoud give a prominent place to attachements, bonds and connections, to an empathy that is he key to all forms of societal changes. Animal love raises many fundamental questions and opens many paths. Does love make communication between species easier? As that empathy generates a better communication between different species, we can wonder if a better way of listening to the animal world would not help us humans to communicate between one another in a deeper and more effective way.
While many now call out not to prevent a distant apocalypse, but to slow down an ongoing collapse (of climate, energy resources, etc.), this collection applies the technical and anthropological thinking of theoreticians of systemic collapse to fantastic fiction.Relying on this political rather than eschatological perspective, it explores recent productions influenced by the context of collapse, and reconsiders old works in the light of this new frame of reference. The articles examine literary works, television series, or even board games.Quebec, Filipino and Irish texts supplement the American and British corpus. The scientific apocalypse of Cold War fiction is set against the classics of high fantasy, and socio-political disintegration against the impacts of pandemics and climate change.
This special issue of Caliban reassesses the discourses, controversies, and socio-political movements that prepared and followed the voting of the Representation of the People Act 1918. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Act which secured the principle of female suffrage in Britain, contributors explore the diverse ways in which women’s political status and citizenship were negotiated and theorized. Exploring a wide array of often understudied sources from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present, the original essays included in this volume testify to the rich polyphony and vital complexity of the history of feminism, and to the difficulties inherent in the making and memorializing of such a history.
The texts presented in this issue of Caliban show the land as writing but also the suffering planet, the land wounded by human actitivities, and the land defended, particularly by texts. The land appears as a palimpsest, and agriculture may be seen as a form of writing, in travel books, in novels or in poems. The transformations of landscapes appear as reflections of history, the myths of First Nations appear as a reflection of the living Earth; the pen and the tool are united through poets’ perception of the Land. The land also heals its inhabitants and the writing of the Earth also appears in tracks: animal tracks as memory of the land. Migrations, roots and uprooting, freedom and stolen lands are political visions of the land writing its story and history. The writing and voices of the nonhuman world are tackled in several texts. Among the powerful texts appearing in this issue, we can mention an unpublished text by Scott Slovic, the co-founder of the international organization ASLE (Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment), an unpublished essay bu Nigerian poet and scholar Niyi Osundare, as well as several of his poems in English and in their French translation.
The essays included in this issue were originally presented at two conferences organized in March 2017 and May 2018 by the research centre Cultures Anglo-Saxonnes, University Toulouse - Jean Jaurès. The authors seek to delineate an ars oblivionis in 20th- and 21st-century British literature, a poetics of forgetting in which oblivion’s ghostly remains make for emancipatory swerves from the past and for the advent of new narrative configurations. After Ricœur and Augé among others, remembering and forgetting are not envisaged as opposites but as a collaborative pair, with forgetting as the condition of memory (Ricœur) or as the lifeblood of memory (Augé). Working on the productive interplay of memory and forgetting, the articles investigate what Derrida calls «the life of forgetting», the living appropriation of forgotten presences acknowledged as loss and yet made to survive, to endure, in renewed and transfigured presences. Thus, forgetting is not only the condition of memory; it is also the condition of creativity and storytelling.
Does the interest of travellers in the nonhuman world allow the travel narrative to be regarded as an example of environmental literature? Do travellers, explorers and mountaineers reveal in their texts a real awareness of the vital interconnection between the human world and the nonhuman, animal, plant or mineral worlds? The articles presented in this volume will try to answer these questions and, through literary and various geographical and scientific works, will show that consciousness and mindfulness are at the core of the perception of the world which surrounds us. Among scholars and writers, who summon both literature and history, pedagogy and teaching of travel writing, geography and exploration, botany and physical sciences, Kev Reynolds, British author of more than forty travel guides and travelogues about the mountains of the world, and Scott Slovic, American specialist in Environmental Literature and Ecoriticism, urge us to turn our cultural attention back from the specifically human realm to the wider, other-than-human, living environment.
The point of departure of these selected studies was the proposition that much of what brings the Mediterranean world to life, whether that world be imaginary or real, comes from the paths that lead to it. In other words, our understanding of this much-studied region is altered if we start out, not from an inland sea, but from the lands surrounding that sea, from the hinterlands, from the blurred margins which both distinguish and soften its contours. The authors in this collection, which brings together academics from Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, Germany and France, have traced the itineraries of those who have travelled towards and away from the Mediterranean. The variety of critical readings and the diversity of the documents studied raise questions about how a given space is conceptualized, and affirm the need for a geography that is both human and mythical, one which accounts for how people cohabit in a shared cultural space.
The work should interest both the general public and an academic audience keen to understand the historical, cultural and aesthetic values of the Mediterranean world, through the history and literature of those writers who, once upon a time, set out in search of the Mediterranean.
Alice Munro’s works have unleashed a large critical coverage which, surprisingly, tends to overlook or elude the animal question. The present volume means to try and redress this oversight, and to present a panorama of the animal question, ranging from the first volume, Dance of the Happy Shades (1968) to her last one, Dear Life (2012). The volume interrogates the functioning of Munro’s stories through her treatment of animals, whether the animal exists as a literal character accompanying man’s actions, or whether it appears in the text through metaphoric, mythic or emblematic allusions. By focusing on her entire œuvre, it investigates the processes of variation animals and human beings are submitted to from her initial stories to her later developments. It simultaneously explores the stylistics, the thematics, and the ethics deployed in her narratives to recapitulate her art of the portrait as an art based on the animal presence. By highlighting the inextricable tissue of animality and humanity, her stories ultimately illustrate the force of an encounter through which all firm distinctions between species cease to obtain.
