Un immeuble dans Paris

Florence Bourillon

Abstracts

The study of a building means taking into consideration the occupation and exploiting strategies of the owner as well as those of the tenants of the flats, the warehouses, or the workshops. The survey is carried out with the use of some "calepins de révision du cadastre" which give a detailed description of the various offices and their occupants. Building number 37 rue Volta is situated in a part of town which was completely renovated during the Second Empire. Like every street spared by urban renewal, the rue Volta became a refuge for expelled inhabitants and craft activities that suddenly developed with opening up of the district. A population of shopkeepers, craftsmen and workers live in the house from the ground floor to the attic. A slow abandon of the mix use of spaces within maison and their growing specialization can be observed as well as increasing amounts of time spent on the premises. Habits of the inhabitants change less rapidly than the appearance of the habitat.
