What is the place and role of women in the Arab and Mediterranean cities? Are cities a source of changes and upheaval that can alter traditional practices? Are they places of emancipation, diversity and equality for women? These are the questions which this issue of Egypt/Arab World tries to explore given the current situation in various countries of the Mediterranean world. The texts of this bilingual publication approach different issues: women’s mobility in the city and their use of urban space; security and social relations in the city; women in urban management and governance systems. The comparative analysis of different contexts and the diversity of case studies provides a new look and enriching light on social evolution and recent policy. This book brings together the different contributions that were presented, in April 2010, in Cairo, at the conference “Gender, cities and local governance in the Arab world and the Mediterranean”.
