Vivre avec la drépanocytose ou le sida : culture et géopolitique des itinéraires thérapeutiques des étrangers caribéens résidant à Saint-Martin
Abstracts
The therapeutic management of Caribbean foreigners living with AIDS or Sickle-Cell disease in Sint Maarten makes use of both traditional and biomedical health systems. Anthropologists and medical doctors have often considered that the so-called cultural understanding of these diseases is responsible of the patients’ non-adherence to treatments. First, this paper will show the social use that patients make of their own culture. Second, it will demonstrate that access to health care, and not cultural representations, is primary in the management of therapy. Finally, it will emphasize that access to health care is related to the French political agenda in the region and that patients’ non-adherence can not be understood if not framed in geopolitical issues.
