Le pentecôtisme en Polynésie française : innovations religieuses et dynamiques du changement socioculturel

Abstracts

Whereas the expansion of Christianity in Oceania — especially the «second wave» of professing militants’ Churches who contest the old Churches which became «traditional» — is still often analysed in terms of «deadly contact» or acculturation, the story of Pentecostalism in French Polynesia brings to light far more complex and ambivalent dynamics. First seen as a foreign religion (or «sect», fa’aro’e’e¯) owing to its presence in the Chinese community, it has in fact given birth to a cross-cultural Church — the God assemblies of French Polynesia — which appears less as a factor of westernisation than as an enlightener of socio-cultural dynamics, neither totally «exogenous», nor exclusively «endogenous»: the development of a plurating of identities a tendency for individuals to become autonomous from family and community obligations. Some movements of Pentecostalism, carrying a more liberal Creed than the one of God assemblies, even joined some forms of ma¯’ohi cultural militancy, thus getting enrolled in a wider process which makes the cultural identity slip from the compulsory heritage area to the one of voluntary re-appropriation.
