Les sociétés démocratiques en France et en Espagne : fragilités et mutations

Las sociedades democráticas en Francia y España: debilidades y mutaciones
Edited by Mathias Rull and Alfonso Pérez-Agote

Western democracies were already subject to criticisms before the onset of the economic recession in 2008. In reducing the scope of public action, this provoked popular discontent with these modern states and their politicians. Focusing on France and Spain, this dossier analyses various aspects of the crisis of current democratic regimes. First it addresses three sets of social problems (access to social services, youth employment and integration of minorities) which governments have been especially ineffective in dealing with, thus contributing to public mistrust of politicians. The subsequent parts deal with some of the reactions to the «social recession» experienced in Spain and France. The common denominator of all the reactions addressed here is that they question democratic representation as it has been functioning over recent decades, whether due to the emergence of important new political actors or to the introduction of mechanisms of participatory democracy in the exercise of public authority.
