Sagas: manuscripts, transmission and the writing of history

The dossier "Sagas: manuscripts, transmission and the writing of history" represents part of the work carried out following the election of Professor Matthew James Driscoll (Arnamagnæan Institute, University of Copenhagen) to a Chair of Excellence, funded by the region Basse-Normandie and the FEDER, and supported by the MRSH at Caen, CRAHAM and the ERLIS (EA 4254).

This Chair allowed for work to be undertaken on two themes: 1) Digitisation and encoding, and 2) Cultural exchanges and written heritage. The second aspect of this research project took an interdisciplinary approach (history, literature, languages) in relation both to the research programmes currently underway at the Université de Caen Basse-Normandie and to Professor Driscoll's own specialisms (the promotion of the Arnamagnæan Collection of Icelandic manuscripts ; textual theory and editorial practices ; the transmission and reception of Breton material in Scandinavia ; the origins and transmission of legendary sagas (Fornaldarsögur Norðurlanda) ; and post-medieval manuscript culture in Iceland, particularly the influence of translations and the literary creation that followed). Professor Driscoll's appointment also allowed for the visit of an early career researcher, Silvia Hufnagle, a doctoral student who defended her thesis at the University of Copenhagen in April 2012.

This dossier primarily represents the proceedings of a workshop held on 3 February 2012 entitled "The Arnamagnæan Collection : experiences in the areas of conservation, promotion and exploitation of written heritage" and of a seminar held on 17 February 2012 on "The value of sagas as historical documents". The dossier is open to other papers that focus on the same themes.
