1After a short introduction by writer and professor of literature, Qadam-‘Alī Sarāmī (pp. 6-8), Zahrā Fatḥī presents in Part I (pp. 9-20) a cursory overview of the life of ‘Ayn al-Qoḍāt (d. 1131), his works, and his Sufi affiliations, drawing upon primary sources and citing a few modern studies in Persian. However, the meat of the book, as the title suggests, deals with ‘Ayn al-Qoḍāt’s mystical theosophy (‘erfān), and in particular his views about the “school of love” (maḏhab-e ‘ešq). Short sections of one or two paragraphs succinctly explain various aspects of his ideas, and are supported with frequent though brief quotations from his writings. There is an ample bibliography (pp. 204-21). Rather than presenting new information or an analytical synthesis, the book introduces university students and general readers to the thought of an original and engaging Persian mystic, who indeed deserves to be better known by those with an interest in Iranian spirituality.
