1Razavi presents his book as the first comprehensive survey of ‘Omar Ḫayyām’s life and works in English for the Western reader. He endeavours to reconstruct Khayyam’s multiple identities (Chap. 1 to 3) which he sees compromised mainly by later interpreters, both in the East and the West. He discusses the context of what he calls Ḫayyām’s exotic fame in the West and the various approaches to interpreting Ḫayyām, his quatrains and his philosophy in the Islamic world, in particular in Iran (Chap. 4 to 6, 8). Razavi also includes a chapter that surveys Ḫayyām’s stature as a scientist (Chap. 7).
