1The mathematician and astronomer Ġiyāṯ al-Dīn Jamšīd al-Kāšī from Kāšān, who worked at the observatory of Ulugh Beg in Samarkand until his death in 1429, devised a well-known algorithm by means of which the sine of one degree can be calculated with arbitrary accuracy. This article presents a translation of a contemporary commentary describing this algorithm, which is extent in at least eight manuscript copies (a ninth copy was recently found in Oxford), together with a facsimile of a lithograph edition of this work published in Tehran in 1881/82. Five of the extant copies attribute the commentary to al-Kāšī’s colleague at Samarkand, Qāḍī-Zāde al-Rūmī, but the first author of this article maintains that it could have been written by Ulugh Beg himself.
