1This thoroughly researched article offers an overview of the original development of the position of supreme army commander in Safavid times, as well as lists of the incumbents. The author plausibly posits that Šāh ‘Abbās probably created the position as a way to divide and rule, and more specifically as a means to outflank the qūrčībāšī, the head of the tribal guards that he was trying to neutralize. He is probably also right in surmising that a lack of war accounts for the lapse in the position between the time of Šāh ‘Abbās II and the reign of Šāh Solṭān Ḥosayn.
