1The Kazan-based historian and archeologist, Iskander Izmailov, has provided us with a detailed discussion of military technology and warfare among the Volga Bulghars in the pre-Mongol era. This well-documented work is divided into two unequal sections. The bulk of the book addresses the types of arms and armor of the Volga Bulghars uncovered at archeological sites in the Volga-Urai regions, many of which were excavated in part by the author. The second part of the book is more analytic, and treats the armament of Volga-Bulghar warriors in a more general way, commenting on military tactics. The author also makes admirable use of written sources to deal with concrete examples of Volga Bulghar military tactics. The book also contains a table listing the archeological sites where all of the finds he discusses were located.
