1In this brief article the A. addresses the issue of the Turkic origin of several major Russian noble families, with special emphasis on noble families of Noghay origin, and examines the conditions under which their ancestors entered Muscovite service. The A. bases his study primarily on sixteenth century Russian sources chronicling Russia’s political interaction with the Noghays and the Crimean Khanate, and demonstrates that both the Noghay servitors and their followers made a major contribution to Muscovy’s military effort in the sixteenth century.
