1Setting out with general reflections on the difficulties of intercultural communication, Ralph Kauz analyses one particular example of Timurid-Chinese contacts of the 15th century: the report by Ġiyāṯ al-Dīn Naqqāš on the Timurid mission to Peking. A series of magnificent banquets and receptions marked their way to the capital, clearly designed to impress the “barbarians” from Central Asia. However, not only the variety of exotic dishes caught their attention, even more important were the acrobatic and artistic presentations and performances that accompanied them. These are placed in a wider context of Ming diplomatic etiquette towards foreign missions.
