Texte intégral
1This text summarizes the main theoretical and methodological developments in the study of Sufism in southern Asia. It explores how scholars in recent decades have used the categories of Sufism and mysticism, and points out the shortcomings of these categories as explanatory tools. While surveying scholarly approaches to Sufism, the areas neglected and those investigated, this article seeks to provide an overview of the academic literature on Indian Sufism. In a final section, the author addresses issues related to the Sufis’ role as mediators between Muslims and Hindus. He questions the model of syncretism and criticizes the monolithic religious identifications used by scholars. The article is a valuable resource for graduate students and scholars who are starting new research projects in this field.
