1As Cyrus Schayegh shows in his essay “Seeing like a state”, the general historiographical perspective on Pahlavi Iran suffers from a simplification owing to the acceptance of the official self-portrait propagated by state authorities before the Revolution. This has prompted the author to reflect on the current state of the historiography of modern Iran and to point out options for future research. He advocates a broader use of new sources and the integration of old perspectives and innovative methodological approaches in order to alter the still prevalent view that the Pahlavi state was the only driving force behind development and the resulting conception of a strict separation between state and society. By way of example, he cites land reform, social policy and the development of the infrastructure before exploring everyday life by analyzing patterns of mass consumption.
