Texte intégral

1The author, Sergey Yatsenko is a specialist of Iranian costume and headgears. In this article he presents some observations and considerations about the Parthian costume, already contained in his monograph about Iranian costume, Костюм древней Евразии (ираноязыч-ные народы), The Costume of Ancient Eurasia (the Iranian- Speaking Peoples)], Moscow, 2006. Few preliminary remarks point out to the difficulty of distinguishing between the costume of the Parthian conquerors and those of the many ethnicities under Arsacid dominance with the former influencing the latter. Yatsenko affirms the importance of clay figurines from Seleucia on the Tigris as a fundamental source on the subject. Many Seleucian figurines (both male and females) wear high conic or flat headgears with interesting parallels from Dura Europos. Concerning the garments, Yatsenko illustrates some characteristics and cloth details, which would suggest a certain influence from west Semitic-speaking populations and on the other side contacts with Central Asiatic neighbours.
