1The author compares Ibn Sīnā’s medical poem as an expression of different perspectives on medical literature held by Ibn Sīnā. He is main interest is to discuss textual agency in the conceptualization of medical literature. The author argues that the organization of the poem, the use of examples, the inclusion of surgery, as well as the exclusion of various themes speak against previous interpretations as a simple, didactic tool for memorizing medical information. Instead of calling it didactic, which the author feels is a term reflecting later phases of medical education, he suggests to see it as a work for practitioners and hence calls the knowledge taught in it and its style of presentation “practicable”.
