Texte intégral

1Discussing the material culture at Levantine royal courts in the first millennium BCE, this contribution includes an analysis of developments in artistic and iconographic conventions at the royal court in Sidon during the Achaemenid period. Among the questions tackled are royal building activities, coinage and burial practices, and how the artistic language and conventions of the court of the Great King affected these aspects. Particularly telling is the example of the royal sarcophagi after the reign of Eshmunazor II, displaying a mix of Near Eastern (including Egyptian) and Greek elements.
