1The memory of the Achaemenids seems to have affected the ideological frameworks characterizing the great political entities that alternated in the centuries between what we call Hellenism and the Parthian period. If this memory appears to have been built on an ideology that seems to have worked in different areas of this supranational state, it was also exploited over the course of time, even thought the attitude towards this memory changed among those who, for whatever reason, were inspired by the Achaemenid experience. Using various types of local sources, this essay deals with a series of cases in which the memory of the Achaemenids was used for propaganda by the Seleucids, as it was done by the Lagids, and other dynasties. This memory remained alive and was mingled with other backgrounds so as to construct new systems of powers and reflect different identities. This is not surprising when considering that since Alexander’s venture the recall to Achameinid kingship was part of the propaganda of the Macedonian leaders, especially of those who formed their own dynasties after his death.
