1This contribution re-assesses the broken toponym in the so-called Nabonidus chronicle, which refers to the goal of Cyrus’s war campaign in 547 BC and which has been variously identified as either Lydia or Urartu. The authors iterate that the connection with Lydia is based mainly on information gleaned from Greco-Roman sources of dubious chronological value, where Cyrus’ overthrow of Croesus’ empire is conventionally dated to the mid-540s BCE. They then focus on the central geographic marker in the text – the crossing of the Tigris near Arbela – and point out parallels in earlier royal inscriptions of Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian kings and the Neo-Babylonian chronicles. In these texts, the Upper Tigris valley is often mentioned in the context of campaigns against Urartu, which they thus tentatively suggest to restore in the Nabonidus chronicle.
