1This study is dedicated to a priestly family in southern Babylonian city of Ur and their landholdings, in particular those managed by the Gallābu-family in the context of the state’s land-for-service system. The exceptionally long-running archive shows that the reign of Darius I and later the reign of Artaxerxes II were key moments in the incorporation of the Babylonian countryside into the Achaemenid state apparatus. This is evidenced for example by the novel taxation of temple estates as bow fief (bīt qašti), i.e., in the framework of the land-for-service system.
