1The paper summarises parts of the Author’s PhD dissertation, defended at the University of Arkansas (M. Panahipour, Dynamics of Land Use, Environment, and Social Organization in the Sasanian Landscape of Eastern Iraq—Western Iran, 2019, retrieved from https://scholarworks.uark.edu/etd/3919). It focuses on settlement patterns and subsistence strategies attested during the Sasanian period in an area located across the Garmian District of the Diyala Governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan and the westernmost sector of the Kermanshah Province of Iran, therefore encompassing valleys of the Sirwan and Alwand rivers as well as foothill areas of the Zagros.
2Relying on remote sensing, geospatial analyses, climatic records, ethnographic parallels and archaeological field surveys, the Author recognises agropastoralism (with mainly rainfed farming) as the most effectual socio-economic model for human groups who lived in that sensitive area, prone to environmental variability and marked by an unstable and irregular access to resources.
3Signs of settlement increase (Sasanian materials were collected on the surface of 77 sites out of the 150 surveyed sites in the area) and expansion of irrigated agriculture (e.g., the canal system on the right bank of the Sirwan river and the Nahr-e Shahgodar associated with the Qasr-e Shirin complex) can only be detected in later phases of the Sasanian period and are tentatively explained by the Author as the result of more favourable climatic conditions and late Sasanian land reforms.
