1The experienced scholar deals with the history of the relations between the independent kingdom of Armenia and its eastern neighbour, the Arsacid Empire. At the end of the 2nd century BC already, the Arsacids began to be interested in that strategically placed political subject. The Great King Mithridates II included the kingdom of Artaxid Armenia in his projects of expansion forcing it into submission and taking as a hostage at his court a young Tigranes II to educate him as a future Arsacid-friendly monarch. The relationships between the two kingdoms were affected through time by the periods of weakness of the Arsacids and by the political interferences of Rome in the area. Dąbrowa concludes his dissertation with the mid-1st century AD Roman defeat at Rhandeia which determined the establishment of an Arsacid dynasty of the longed kingdom. Like an experienced writer of mystery books Dąbrowa only at the end gives to the reader the keys to correctly interpret what at first sight appeared as a mere narration of events. By reconsidering more than one and a half centuries of Armeno-Parthian relations he distinguishes three different phases. In the first one, between Mithridates II and Phraates IV (late 1st century BC), the Arsacids tried to control Armenia through friendly members of the local dynasty without expressing the intention to annex the state. In the second one, Parthia had to deal with the Roman attempts to place on the throne Rome's friendly candidates. Finally, from Parthian king Artabanus, Ctesiphon developed a new policy for Armenia which implied the placement of a member of the Arsacid dynasty on the throne, a strategy accomplished after Randheia.
