Texte intégral

1This book serves as an introduction to the Avesta for a general public, but is at the same time conceived for specialists, insofar as it is also a compendium of the most recent studies and the changes experienced in the field in the last years. It is divided into the following chapters: 1) the formation of the Avestan philology, from the arrival of the first Avestan manuscript to Europe (1723) to the publication of Ch. Bartholomae’s Altiranisches Wörterbuch (1904); 2) the writing down of the Avesta, specifically the problem of the reconstruction of a written archetype in either Arsacid or Sasanian times; 3) the manuscripts in which the Avestan texts were transmitted, with very informative details about their copyists, colophons, and main features; 4) the transmitted text of the Avesta, in which the authors tackle the main challenges that scholars face when editing Avestan texts, and highlight the new focus on the liturgical manuscripts of the Iranian branch of the written transmission; and 5) the internal analysis of the constituent parts of the Avesta, which mainly discusses the Yašt, Wīdēwdād and Yasna, and is exemplified by selected passages in French translation.

2Following these chapters, the authors propose a relative chronology for the Avestan texts (from 1000–850 BCE for the Old Avestan texts to 650–600 BCE for the oldest Young Avestan ones). Finally, a bibliographical appendix lists the most relevant editions and studies of each text.
