1This brilliant paper evaluates carefully the recently discovered third volume of Afḍal al-tavārīḫ of Faḍlī Ḫūzānī al-Eṣfahānī, comparing it with Tārīḫ-e ‘Ālam-ārā-ye ‘Abbāsī of Eskandar Beg, which has been considered as the most comprehensive history of the rule of ‘Abbās I. The author argues that the most distinctive characteristic of Faḍlī’s work consists in the fact that, contrary to the official history of Eskandar Beg, it was a history of the dynasty written from a private standpoint and based upon Faḍlī’s personal observations. Maeda points out four original features of the chronicle. Firstly, it describes in detail marriage alliances between noble families of Safavid Iran. Secondly, it contains much information about the royal family, in particular its female members. Thirdly, it explains at length the local administration and the diplomatic etiquette. Fourthly, it gives original narratives on the dynasty’s relations with the Caucasus.
