1The litterateur Ṭarā’efī Ḫvārazmī, better known as Ṣadr al-Afāḍel (555-617 h.q./ 1160-1220), here selects lines of Arabic verse by various poets, arranging them thematically in twelve chapters: (1) al-ḥekam wa'l-amṯāl, (2) makārem al-aḫlāq, (3) al-efteḫār be'l-nafs wa'l-ābā’, (4) al-ḫamr wa'l-ḡazal, (5) al-awṣāf wa'l-tašbīhāt, (6) al-ṯanā’ wa'l-šokr wa'l-estemāḥa, (7) al-mokātebāt wa ḍorūb men al-mo’āḫāt wa'l-tašawwoq, (8) al-hejā wa'l-mojūn, (9) šekāyat al-dahr wa ahleh, (10) al-tahānī wa'l-ta‘āzī, (11) al-šayb wa'l-zohd, (12) laṭā’ef al-ḫekāyāt wa'l-moḫāḍerāt (this latter chapter featuring mostly prose aphorisms). The work features many poets of Khorasan and Khwarazm writing in Arabic (including the author, himself), alongside some more canonical authors, and was evidently conceived as a sourcebook of quotations for secretaries or courtiers.
2The Arabic text of Ṣadr al-Afāḍel was copied in Rajab 592 h.q./June 1196 and translated to Persian by Movaffaq b. Ṭāher [N.B. : the cover and title pages read Ẓāher-e Ḫvārazmī, but the text (xv, 142-3) and jacket cover give Movaffaq b. Ṭāher al-Mofasserī al-Fāryābī] in 593 h.q./1197, using many archaic or rare Persian words of Khorasan. The work was conceived as a word-by-word interlinear gloss of the Arabic, rather than a stand-alone translation, as shown in the two ms. pages reproduced (xxxii-xxxiii) from the unique surviving ms. (Laleli #1750, Istanbul).
3This scholarly edition was prepared by Moṣṭafā Olīā’ī, beginning back in 1976 as a doctoral dissertation under the direction of Mojtabā Mīnovī, defended two days before the latter’s death. It features a useful introduction to the author and the ms., as well as the language and orthography of the text (xi-xxxi), and includes biographical notices of the ninety-eight individuals mentioned in the text (mostly the poets whose verse is quoted, 145-95), an index of names (196-8), a glossary of Persian words and phrases (199-207), and a bibliography (207-12).
