Presentation

By associating various approaches (e.g. linguistics, and genetics, as well as epistemocritical, intertextual and inter-aesthetic theories), the works published in this review oppose discourse and representation by questioning the relationship between literature and the arts to other knowledge systems coming from the social sciences as well as material or natural sciences. Individual volumes of the review center around either a certain discipline or particular question while others are transversal and cover several disciplines. Articles may also address the process of creation and aesthetics or center around works themselves, while mobilizing various analytical methods.

Rousseau created herbaria both for his own use and for others. He devoted particular care to these collections, which are simultaneously scientific objects, pedagogical tools, and works whose aesthetic value he explicitly emphasized. Yet Rousseau’s herbaria long remained difficult to access. Now digitized and virtually gathered on a dedicated platform, they benefit from growing scholarly interest, as evidenced by this issue, which seeks to foster dialogue between botany, the history of science, philosophy, and literature. Some contributions immerse the reader in the complexity of these largely unexplored collections in order to shed light on their functions, while others take a step back to examine the herbaria’s visual epistemology and to situate Rousseau within the history of scientific ideas and practices.
