The Palestinian Revolution

The Palestinian Revolution is an online learning and teaching resource exploring the Palestinian revolutionary culture between 1948 and 1982. Initiated by Dr Karma Nabulsi (Oxford University) the site is co-authored, curated, and edited by Professors Nabulsi and Abdel Razzaq Takriti (University of Houston) and supported by numerous individuals (Abdel Mohsen Qattan, Dr Nabil Qaddumi, Hani Kalouti, Samir Ghalib Younis, Rana Sadik, and Sawsan Asfar) and institutions (the Oxford Palestine Archive Foundation, South Africa Democracy Education Trust, the Museum of the History of the Cuban Revolution), The project is now affiliated with the Centre for Palestine Studies at SOAS (University of London), the European Centre for Palestine Studies at Exeter University, Bir Zeit University, An-Najah University, the Abu Jihad Centre at Al-Quds University all in Palestine, the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair at the University of Houston, the Institute of Palestine Studies Library in Beirut, the Historical Institute at Havana, the Centre for Education and Transformation (CERT) at the Faculty of Education of the University of Johannesburg.

The Palestinian Revolution is made of three modules:

1. Teach the Revolution is a 12-weeks course touching on the following themes: 

  • The Nakba Generation
  • Transnational Revolutionaries: Palestinians in the Arab Armies, Unions, Anti-Colonial Movements & Parties in the 1950s
  • Dreaming Revolution: Clandestine Networks and Public Associations, 1951-1967
  • From the Establishment of the PLO to the 1967 Naksa and the Rise of Revolutionary Legitimacy
  • Revolutionary Thought and Practice
  • Revolution on the Borders: Jordan
  • Revolution on the Borders II: The Resistance in Lebanon, 1969-1976
  • From the Defense of the South to the Siege of Beirut
  • Palestine in the World: Palestinian Solidarity and Solidarity with Palestine
  • Revolutionary Culture
  • Inside the Prisons
  • Revolutionary Diplomacy.

This module is aimed at supporting lecturers, advanced undergraduate or graduate students, researchers as well as for the general public. "Each topic can be studied using primary sources and writings from the period, selected to provide diverse written and oral history coverage, and featuring memoirs, interviews, communiqués, resolutions, declarations, photographs, videos, songs, posters, and excerpts from revolutionary publications."

2. Learn the Revolution is an online gallery exploring the following subjects:

  • revolutionary movements
  • revolutionary moments
  • revolutionary culture.

To do so, it looks at "some core aspects of the Palestinian revolutionary life presented through the voices of the cadres of the Palestinian revolution." This section includes oral testimonies filmed in Palestine, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the United Kingdom.

3. Cadres features interviews conducted with Palestinian revolutionary cadres who were active between the early 1950s and the late 1970s chosen from a larger oral history collection gathered in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and the United Kingdom between 2009 and 2016. Available on the Learn Palestine Youtube channel, the interviews are subtitled in English. These oral testimonies will be useful to teachers, researchers, the general public, as well as political theorists, scholars of revolution, and students of anti-colonialism, republicanism, tricontinentalism, national liberation movements, labour, race, gender, Middle East studies, etc.

With regards to conditions applicable to materials use, it is important to note that The Palestinian Revolution "is licenced under Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial No Derivatives. All material on the website must be attributed to the author(s) or original copyright holder. Website content cannot be used for commercial purposes under any circumstances. Derivative works cannot be created without permission."

The website is bilingual Arabic/English.
