De Syméon Stylite à Simón del desierto. Un désert tardo-antique entre histoire et cinéma

Florian Gallon
p. 87-104

Abstracts

This paper aims to study the role and representation of the desert in Buñuel’s Simón del desierto (1965). Just as the film’s main protagonist is inspired by the figure of Simeon Stylites, a fifth-century Syrian ascetic and founder of the stylitic movement, so the landscape portrayed by the Spanish filmmaker borrows from the historical deserts of the Late Antique Near East, where the first Christian hermits used to withdraw. While Buñuel offers a plausible representation of this historical asceticism in the desert, our aim is not so much to measure its accuracy as to understand the way in which he seizes upon the paleo-Christian desert to express some social and metaphysical issues recurring through his cinematographic work.
