1A Josephson tunnel junction is a superconducting quantum electronic device. It consists of two superconductors separated by a thin insulating barrier. A Josephson junction’s nonlinear properties allow using it as a sensitive spectrometer to probe the energy spectrum of other quantum “mesoscopic” devices in the range 1-200 GHz. Such energy spectra, difficult to obtain by other means, allow understanding the physics of these mesoscopic devices. We have designed and commenced testing of such a Josephson junction based spectrometer. We have developed a circuit geometry that avoids detrimental effects such as parasitic microwave resonances and relaxation oscillations. We have coupled the spectrometer to simple test devices such as other Josephson junctions and superconducting quantum interference devices. The preliminary results are promising: the bandwidth of the spectrometer is as expected and the background noise is low.
