The authors of this thematic section examine the cancer patients' experiences when confronted with biomedical and social norms. They particularly focus on those which enjoin to maintain or return to a "normal" life. Faced with this injunction, each of the contributors broaches the attitudes of affected individuals and their relatives according to their age and social and cultural environment. This approach makes the domain of oncology a fruitful prism for examining the weight and the arbitrary dimension of dominant norms in our societies. Among other analytical focuses, the field of cancer allows to tackle the tension between logics of domination and 'assignment' to autonomy and individual responsibility of the patients with regard to their health. The conditions for a "modern" subject to emerge then appear as watermark, one of his/her possible abilities being to question the collective rules governing his/her personal experience of the disease.
