Although self-care is by no means a contemporary behavior, current practices and the representations that underlie them have new characteristics, in line with recent transformations in the experience of health and illness. The definition of self-medication to which the contributors to this dossier refer is based on an inductive approach, based on the meanings that the actors give to their practices, without presuming the nature of the recourse employed (incorporation of remedies, eating habits, behavioral rituals, physical activities, etc.). The articles gathered have in common that they examine the way in which social conditions of existence, "experiential knowledge" and collective prescriptions of behavior or consumption involving moral issues are articulated within a given population or territory. This analytical framework, which is attentive to social determinants as well as to shared meaning systems, as well as to biographical and interpersonal dimensions, helps to shed light on the practices implemented in their complexity.
