Abstract

The archaeological site of Petres, southeast of Florina in northern Greece, was first identified in 1913 through inscriptions embedded in the walls of a local church. Confirmed in the 1930s through small-scale excavations, additional remains were uncovered during road construction in the 1950s. Systematic excavations began in 1997, focusing on the southern plateau and the Acropolis. The site was initially inhabited in the Iron Age and showed a continuous habitation until the 2nd century BCE. The excavations up today have revealed a densely populated urban complex with irregularly shaped residential blocks and public structures, including a fountain and a sanctuary of Zeus. The settlement's design adapted to the hill's slopes, with access roads following the elevation lines, illustrating its historical and cultural significance (Veleni, 1991, 1998).
