Introduction
In the Danghara region of southern Tajikistan, the archaeological site of Zol-i Zard is a vast 7-hectare meadow, with at least four small artificial hills (tepe), one swamp and some humid areas, surrounded by 6-metre-high mudbrick walls including 14 towers. The site, known since the 1970s (Denisov, 1979; Filimonova et Akhmetzianov, 2009), is likely to contain remains from the Hellenistic period to Modern period and has been the focus of a French-Tajik archaeological mission since 2019 (Gelin et al., 2023; Gelin et al., in press). In conjunction with several areas of archaeological excavation, we carried out two geophysical measurement campaigns, in autumn 2022 and spring 2023, in an attempt to obtain an overall picture of the site and its immediate surroundings, and to help identify new areas for archaeological prospection.
