Introduction
Between 2022 and 2024, an integrated survey combining ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic induction (EMI) and recent archaeological excavations was carried out at the Early Mesolithic site of Lüchow, Hzgt. Lauenburg district, Schleswig-Holstein (northern Germany). The 2022 excavation uncovered not only the remains of an Early Mesolithic camp site on the edge of ancient Lake Duvensee, but also the oldest cremation burial in Northern Germany, made by Mesolithic hunters, fishers, and gatherers around 10,500 years ago. Ancient Lake Duvensee is indeed a key site for the study of this period and has been investigated for almost a century, providing the location of 25 Mesolithic camps on former sand islands (Figure 1a) (Gross et al., 2018; Bokelmann, 2012) including Lüchow 11 (Figure 1b/c), with the cremation burial, and the new site Lüchow 20 (Figure 1b/d).
