Résumé

Study of the magnetic properties of a glassmaker’s workshop, measurements taken both on the structures and the activity area, initial measurements reveal notable differences between various parts of the furnace.

Introduction

The archaeological site of Mandeure, ancient Epomanduodurum, underwent extensive geophysical surveys in the early 2000s. These results revealed the urban organization of the Gallo-Roman city and highlighted several craft zones (Bossuet et al., 2012). The PlaeTEx project centers on the resumption of work and investigation into ancient craft methods. This project is led by V. Pichot (CNRS-MSHE Ledoux) and supported by the Togirix association.

This project focuses on fire-related crafts through experimentation: experimental archaeology, experimentation of study protocols, and “chaîne opératoire”. In this context, two glassmaker furnaces were built following the assumed practices during Antiquity (fig. 1).
