State of the art and approach
The development of lightweight magnetometers and increasingly compact, powerful drones has significantly advanced the application of drone-magnetometry in the geosciences. Systems can be categorized into scalar and vector magnetometers, single-channel and multi-channel configurations, as well as sensors and sensor arrays either suspended beneath drones or directly fixed to the aircraft (Kaub et al., 2021). Since their introduction, these instruments have demonstrated strong potential for archaeological surveys in both, accessible (Stele et al., 2023) and inaccessible areas (Schmidt et al., 2024). However, there are currently only a few research projects dealing with their capabilities in the field of exploded and unexploded ordnance (UXO) detection.
