- 1 SINTAS is a new association, founded in 2022, which aims to attract students to history studies.
This book came out just over a year after the untimely passing of Mona Lohanda. Mona Lohanda is one of the few if not the only Sino-Indonesian woman historian and archivist to have trained history students at the University of Indonesia. Some of these former students as well as several Indonesian and foreign researchers pay tribute to her in this volume that was published with the support of the association SINTAS (Sejarah Lintas Batas or Cross Border History).1

These contributions are preceded by two forewords, one by Hilmar Farid, Director General of Culture, and the other by the editors, a short memoire by a younger sister of Mona, and an obituary by Peter Carey2 to which a bibliography is appended (pp. 11-15).3
The eighteen contributions are divided into five parts which reflect the various topics that interested Mona Lohanda and on which she herself worked. Social history plays an important role in it. The first part, “Warisan Keilmuan: Buruh dan Pergerakan” (pp. 16-86) regroups four contributions that deal with labour, political and social movements. One raises the issue of the concealment of Tan Ling Djie’s role at a certain point in the history of the PKI, another the controlling of women labourers in the public sphere, while the last two deal with national movements.
The second part “Warisan Keilmuan: Kearsipan” (pp. 87-136) has only two contributions emanating from local archivists, that aim to show how rich the archives would be if we knew how to use them.
The third part “Warisan Keilmuan: Sejarah Jakarta” (pp. 137-233) regroups six contributions. Two of which deal respectively with the history of Jakarta as seen through the construction of public buildings, such as the City Hall of Batavia, and the emergence of hotels during the colonial era. Two others deal with social life, as reflected in Benjamin’s songs, and in the criminal world of the quarter of Pasar Senin in the 1950s, and the last one is about flooding and control in Jakarta between 1950 and 1985.
The fourth part “Etnis Tionghoa” (pp. 234-267) consists of two articles, one dealing with the study of the Chinese during colonial era, and the other with the sad fate of the Indonesian Chinese who, in the 1950s and 1960s, decided to return to PRC.
As for the fifth and last part, “Identitas dan Sejarah Lokal” (pp. 268-328), it consists of studies dealing respectively with the ceremony of the cap or seal in 17th-century Aceh, the beginning of Christian education in Depok, the rise and fall of the Japanese community in Yogyakarta, and a closing note.
This brief presentation will suffice to convince the reader of the variety of Mona Lohanda’s interests and of the appeal of her work to younger researchers.
