In Memoriam Lyudmila Demidyuk (1936-2023)

1A noted scholar of our time, a Soviet and Russian linguist, teacher, author of a textbook on the Indonesian language and a number of dictionaries, our colleague and friend Lyudmila Nikolaevna Demidyuk passed away on July 4, 2023 in Moscow.

2Lyudmila Demidyuk was born on March 4, 1936 in Moscow in the family of a government official: her father was a noted expert in the field of mining.

3In 1963, she graduated from the Institute of Oriental Languages at Lomonosov Moscow State University (since 1973 – Institute of Asian and African Studies). Her teachers were noted Soviet linguists, specialists on Indonesian and other South-East Asian languages Andrei Pavlenko (1939-1970), Yury Mazur (1924-1999) and Indonesian poet and professor Intojo (1912-1971).

4After graduation, she immediately began teaching Indonesian language and linguistic disciplines at the Department of Philology of Southeast Asia, Korea and Mongolia of her alma mater. The active development of relations between the USSR and Indonesia that time required a large number of translators and specialists with knowledge of the Indonesian language.

5In 1969, Lyudmila Nikolaevna defended her thesis for the degree of PhD in philology “The reduplication in the modern Indonesian language.”

6Promoted to Associate Professor in 1976, she continued to teach Indonesian until her retirement in 2018, having trained hundreds of qualified specialists, but she never stopped doing research, focusing on the preparation of textbooks and dictionaries. Area of her researches was Indonesian linguistics, Malay language, Indonesian literary language (written and oral forms), interaction of dialects, in particular, the Jakarta dialect and modern Indonesian language. She is the author of textbooks and manuals that are widely used in all oriental universities in Russia and the CIS, where Indonesians are trained.

7She became the author of a number of educational courses: “Theory and practice of translation (Indonesian language),” “Speech practice of the main oriental language (Indonesian),” “Introduction to Indonesian and Malay special philology,” etc. acted, as the supervisor of many doctoral candidates including Jenny M. T. Harjatno, who was the first Indonesian scholar defending the doctoral dissertation on problems of the Russian language (1998).

8Her work did not go unnoticed. She is a recipient of the Prima Comexindo Award (1994), the Indonesian Government Certificate (1995), the Presidential Friends of Indonesia award (2008), got the title “Honored Lecturer of Moscow University” (2004).

9Together with her relatives and colleagues, many generations of her students mourn her death. We will always remember her and her contribution to the development of Indonesian studies in Russia.
