Notes to contributors
Plan
Haut de pageAuthors are responsible for the contents of their contributions, especially the accuracy of quotations and bibliographical references. In case of plagiarism, they will be solely responsible for their act.
Furthermore, it is their responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce illustrations and multimedia documents that they did not create (figures, tables, maps, sound and video extracts, etc.) and to mention the origins of said documents in their captions.
Guidelines for the text
When submitting manuscripts to Ateliers d’anthropologie in English or in French, the following guidelines should be respected:
– the text should be in a format compatible with Word
– article contents should be presented in the following order:
- title
- the author’s first and last name, position and institutional affiliation, e-mail address
- an abstract of between 800 and 1000 characters (spaces included)
- 5 or 6 keywords (of which one should be geographical, if applicable)
- the text, maximum 50,000 characters (spaces included) or 8,000 words
- Bibliographical references
- Annexes, if applicable
– in the text (with or without footnotes) the heading levels should appear clearly (no more than two in principle). No bold or underlining in the body of the text. Italics are reserved for foreign languages but can, occasionally, be used to emphasise a group of words
– short quotations stay within the text, between double quotation marks (“x”). If the quotation is in another language, it should be italicised as well. Long quotations (exceeding approximately 350 characters including spaces) should be placed in an independent, fully-indented paragraph. Gaps are indicated by [...]. Additions are to be placed in square brackets as well.
Guidelines for illustrations and multimedia documents
Illustrations are accepted in the following formats: ai, psd, eps, jpg, png, tif… If you are a Mac user, please ensure that the document extensions are visible.
Every illustration should be numbered and labelled as a map, figure, table or photo. The caption should appear above illustration.
For multimedia documents, please contact us.
Bibliography guidelines (citations and references)
Bibliographical citations
References are preferably cited within the text. However, citations should be placed in footnotes in the following cases, to avoid burdening the text:
– when there are three or more successive bibliographical citations;
– to avoid breaking up sentences;
– in the case of citations such as “See Peatrik, 1991” or “On..., see Lamphear, 1992”.
Reference citations placed within the text or in footnotes should be presented in the following format:
– For citations within the text:
(Adler, 1991)
(Gernet, 1991, 1995c)
(Fratkin, 1979; Lamphear, 1992)
(Tornay, 1989a: 52-53)
(1927) or (1927: 132) if the author’s name appears in the sentence
([1938] 1987) in the case of a new edition
(ibid.) (ibid.: 100-106) if the reference has just been cited
– For citations in footnotes:
Cartry, [1973] 1993; Dupire, 1982.
Dieterlen, 1993: 224-226.
Au sujet des Peul, cf. Vidal, 1990: 25-26.
Lydall (1993: 35) parlait de la relation…
Format of bibliographical references
Do not write author surnames in upper case (write Dieterlen, not DIETERLEN). Make sure that all works cited in the text appear in the bibliography and, conversely, that every work included in the bibliography is cited at least once within the text. If an author’s name has changed, the name appearing in the bibliographical reference must be respected, and the entries should be cross-referenced. There will therefore be as many bibliographical entries as there are names. For example: Vassas, Claudine [see Fabre, Claudine] and Fabre, Claudine [see Vassas, Claudine].
