Mobility and social dynamics across the Alps during the Late Iron Age
Texte intégral
1The Late Iron Age was a period of intense interaction, when people, materials, and practices circulated across regions, reshaping communities and modes of identity. This talk examines mobility not as a marginal occurrence but as a structuring principle of Late Iron Age social organization. Grounded in published and ongoing analyses from the CELTUDALPS project (www.celtudalps.com), it explores how isotopic and funerary evidence jointly illuminate the interplay between movement, social cohesion, and cultural belonging. Isotopic analyses reveal long-distance connections across the European landscape, yet they also highlight a persistent limitation: short-range residential mobility, likely more frequent than long-distance relocation, often remains beyond isotopic resolution. Funerary contexts provide a crucial complementary perspective. The consistent inclusion of non-local individuals within local mortuary traditions suggests that belonging was articulated through participation rather than origin, while occasional distinctive objects or gestures evoke enduring memories of place and ancestry. Taken together, these lines of evidence invite a reconsideration of mobility as a creative and negotiated social process, one through which Late Iron Age communities managed diversity, reproduced collective identities, and sustained continuity amid change.
