"Corps blessés, sociétés violentes : Regards croisés sur les violences interindividuelles dans les sociétés du passé"
Exploring the emergence of warfare and gendered violence in prehistoric Europe
Texte intégral
1When Steven Pinker in The Better Angels of our Nature (2011) wrote about an anarchic, prehistoric past steadily moving towards a more peaceful, civilized present he presented a bird’s eye view of human history, an approach that avoided outliers, variations and diversity. The large number of bioarchaeological studies on violence, and prehistoric violence in particular in the last couple of decades has put paid to this illusion of simplicity. We now have numerous regional and large sample size studies that allow us to present a more nuanced and informed view of the levels as well as motivations for and consequences of violence in prehistory. These studies also allow insights into how the nature of human conflict changes and varies in scale and becomes more directed and selective. This presentation is going to reflect on how large-scale violence and warfare emerge and develop in prehistory, who is affected and – beyond numbers and prevalence rates – how an experiential approach to past violence allows us to understand the emergence of group-selective violence, which features ever more prominently in recent conflicts.
