Founded in 1859, the aim of the BMSAP is to keep abreast with international academic research in the area of human natural history. The journal focuses firstly on the origins and evolution of hominids and their population processes based on archaeological, genetic and demographic data, and secondly on the dynamics of change in societies and their environments and the social and cultural responses these bring about. The BMSAP are published by the Société d'Anthropologie de Paris in open access. Their periodicity is biannual and they publish each year an electronic supplement dedicated to the colloquia of the Société d'Anthropologie de Paris.
From 1859 to 1999, the BMSAP are available on  Persée. The issues from 2010 to 2017 were then edited by Springer, then by Lavoisier from 2017 to 2020.

Past BMSAP issues published until 2020 are now available in open access: 1859-1999, 2000-2009, 2010-2017, and 2016-2020

The journal is funded with support from the French National Fund for Open Science.
