Call for Special Issue "Visual essays: ethno-arts, drawing, photography "

Deadline: 31 December 2018

Accepted languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

The use of images has acquired an increasingly prominent role in ethnographic research. By the means of photography, video or drawing, researchers have come to construct particular ways of representing and relating to their ethnographic terrain. The relation between images and anthropological thought can take on many different flavours, depending on the epistemological role attributed to them. However, within academia, there is still a lack of opportunities to put the image at the centre of the debate, and to make images the focus of ethnographic narrative and analytical discourse. In this dossier of Cadernos de Arte e Antropologia, we want to give researchers and artists the opportunity to present their visual ethnographic essays. By this, we seek to give prominence to images as a matter of analytical and aesthetic discourse. We accept visual essays (drawings, photography, illustrations, etc.), accompanied by short written texts that contextualize and/or discuss the visual work. The main focus lays in ethnographic evidence capable to demonstrates strong aesthetic and analytical qualities, thus contributing to the discussion on the potential of the image within social sciences.

Submissions should be in accordance with the Author Guidelines of the journal and its respective Section Policies.
