Publication and evaluation charter

1. Submission of articles

The Cahiers François Viète follow the deontological rules relating to scientific publishing. In this respect, the authors guarantee:

  • that their article is an original which has not been submitted or published in any other publication medium (book, chapter, website, etc.)

  • that the research has been conducted in accordance with the ethics of research in the humanities and social sciences;

  • that there is no plagiarism in their text and that they have ensured that they cite appropriately the authors whose work they use; that they do not paraphrase or copy extracts from another author's publication without citation; that they do not appropriate the results of research conducted by others;

  • that any sources of funding are mentioned (ANR, laboratories, etc.);

  • that all illustrations inserted in the article remain under their original legal mention and that all procedures relating to rights of use, reproduction, and distribution on the journal’s website have been completed: the journal may request proof of this;

  • that generative artificial intelligence tools have not been used to create, modify, or manipulate the research data and results, or to write the text. Only AI aids designed to improve grammar and spelling are permitted. For any other use of AI, authors must inform the editorial board and transparently describe how AI tools were used.

In the case of a submission signed by several authors, the lead author guarantees that the co-authors have read the charter, approved the submitted version, as well as the final version of the article accepted for publication (if such is the case).

2. Evaluation procedure

General

The policy for the evaluation of articles (Varia and thematic volumes) is based at least on a double blind review, which is only undertaken if the article has been evaluated as admissible (see below).

For a thematic volume, one or two referents, belonging to the editorial board or possibly to the scientific committee, are appointed by the editorial board to organise the review of the various articles making up the volume.

For Varia articles, the review is organised by a referee appointed by the editorial board.

Anonymisation is carried out at each stage and concerns the names of authors and expert reviewers.

The journal undertakes to inform the authors of the results of the review within six months of receipt of the article.

During this period, the authors undertake not to submit their text in parallel to another journal or for any other publication.

After this period, if the author has not received any feedback on the review, and on condition that he/she informs the editorial board, he/she may propose his/her text for another publication.

Admissibility of the article

On receipt of the proposed article, the editorial board (in the case of a varia article) or the editors in collaboration with the referents (in the case of a thematic volume) carry out an initial study by checking:

  • the relevance of the proposal in relation to the themes and objectives of the journal and/or the volume,

  • the scientific rigour of the proposal,

  • the editorial quality,

  • the conformity with the presentation standards and the editorial calendar,

  • the presence of all the elements requested (abstracts, keywords, etc.),

  • the use of the standard page.

Any proposal received that does not sufficiently meet the scientific requirements and editorial standards of the journal will not be considered.

Any proposal received that is incomplete or does not use the standard page will be returned to the author for compliance. On receipt of a compliant version, it will be assessed as to its admissibility.

Double blind expertise

For eligible proposals, a double blind review is organised. It is entrusted to two referees chosen from the reading committee or from outside the committee.

As far as possible, the referees will not come from the same laboratory or institution as the author. If the field limits the number of potential referees, a colleague from the field covered by the article and a more generalist colleague will be chosen.

The referees will receive the anonymised text in a format (doc or pdf) allowing them to insert comments directly into the text. These comments will be anonymised before transmission to the author.

The referees may use an evaluation form organised around four assessment criteria: Scientific interest of the text / Interest of the problematisation and methodology / Quality of the sources and bibliography / Quality of the writing, and give four opinions: Favourable opinion for publication of the article as is / Minor modifications to be considered / Major modifications to be considered / Proposal to reject the article.

For each criterion, the referees are required to explain their opinions. They may also make suggestions for corrections or improvements. In the event of a major discrepancy between the two referees opinions, the referent will ask for a third referee or will organise an internal counter-expertise.

Referees commit to:

  • not evaluating an article if they recognize the author and there is a conflict of interest,

  • conducting their evaluation with objectivity and impartiality,

  • provide a reasoned and constructive opinion,

  • guarantee the confidentiality of the article entrusted to them: they are not permitted to use or communicate any elements of the article (excerpts, results, data, etc.),

  • guarantee scientific integrity: they must report any suspicion of plagiarism, scientific fraud, or insufficiently referenced borrowings.

Assessment of the expertise and opinion of the committee

For articles in a thematic dossier

Once the expert opinions have been received, the referent responsible for the article draws up a report on the referees opinions, informing the author of:

  • the decision of the editorial board (see below) and a deadline for sending a new version if this is the case;

  • the opinion of the editorial board;

  • the preliminary report of the volume's editor;

  • the two reports and any annotations of the referees.

For Varia articles

Once the referees opinions have been received, the referent for the article draws up a report on the referees opinions, informing the author of:

  • the decision of the editorial board (see below) and a deadline for sending a new version if this is the case;

  • the opinion of the editorial board;

  • the two reports and any annotations from the referees.

In all cases, it is the referent in agreement with the editorial board who decides on the follow-up of the submitted text. The decision may be an acceptance as it stands, a request for modification for further evaluation or a refusal.

The results of the expert reports are communicated to the authors and referees.

Expertise follow-up

If modifications are requested, the authors are invited to revise their text according to the comments made by the referees, within a period varying from two to four months depending on the case.

If the amended version is not submitted within the requested timeframe, the editorial board reserves the right not to proceed.

Upon receipt of the amended version, the same referees will be asked to follow up on the article, on the basis of the same procedures and a new opinion from the editorial board. If the referees are unable to carry out a second review, the referent may request a third referee or carry out an internal review.

At any time, the editorial board may reject a text if the modifications do not sufficiently meet the changes requested by the referees and the board. Thus, a text may be rejected in the second or third phase of the review.

It is the editorial board that takes the final decision to accept or reject texts.

3. Proofreading and ready to publish

The journal reserves the right to make editorial changes to any text accepted for publication for the purpose of stylistic correction or terminological clarification.

These formal modifications will be systematically submitted to the author for proofreading, validation and agreement: the journal thus undertakes to send the author a “ready to publish” form for final verification.

In the event of disagreement, the journal makes the final decision on these formal aspects.

Once the publication has been approved by the journal, the article is posted online on the OpenEdition platform.

No changes may be requested after this has been posted online.

In certain extreme cases, however, it is possible to add an erratum or remove a text: only the metadata remains, accompanied by a note from the journal.

4. Conditions of distribution

Les Cahiers François Viète publishes in two forms: a paper volume of the volumes and a deposit on its website of the pdf files of the volume and of each article.

The digital version is distributed as a Diamond model (free of charge for readers and authors), in immediate access, open to all and under the Creative Commons license - Attribution - No Commercial Use - No Modification 4.0 International - CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

Printed distribution is restricted: due to the limited number of copies printed for each issue, the paper volume is sent free of charge on request.

The journal and the authors undertake to inform each other in advance of any re-use, reproduction or translation of the articles published.

Reminder: all illustrations inserted in the article remain under their original legal mention. The journal may request proof of this.

By submitting an article to the journal, authors agree to the publication of their article under these conditions.

5. Repository in open archives

The journal encourages authors to reference their articles in open archives.

However, in order to avoid duplication and to facilitate the consultation of articles in their original publication space, we recommend the deposit of only the abstract and the link to the website of the journal for access to the full article.
