Journal Details and Proposal Guidelines

The Journal

Caliban is an international peer-reviewed bi-annual journal dedicated to exploring fresh perspectives across literature, history, political science, visual and performing arts—including film and television—and translation. Each themed issue delivers rich, in-depth analyses alongside individual articles and expert reviews of scholarly works, offering both disciplinary and interdisciplinary insights that illuminate the dynamic field of English studies. The journal engages with innovative theories, and pioneering research, and explores topics that have never been tackled before.

Each issue includes a thematic section, an open topic articles section and an academic book reviews section. The journal welcomes articles in French and in English.

The journal is managed by an Editorial Board and an Advisory Board, chaired by the General Editor(s). Each board member is elected for 5 years (renewable).

General editors are elected by the Editorial Board every 5 years (renewable once). They organise the editorial calendar. They can make suggestions to modify the by-laws.

The contents of the thematic issue proposed by guest-editors are vetted by the Editorial Board and the General Editors. Members of the Advisory Board can be asked to participate in the vetting process if the proposed issues falls into their field of expertise.

Proposal Guidelines

Proposals for Thematic Issues

Proposals for a thematic issue should be submitted to the journal’s general editors at the address below. The proposals will be vetted by the international editorial committee. All articles submitted for an approved thematic issue will be sent for peer-reviewing. The anonymity of authors and referees is guaranteed by the peer-review process.

The thematic section of the journal features:

- an introduction between 3000 and 6000 words;

- 6 to 16 articles between 6000 et 8000 words (notes included);

- it may also feature an afterword between 3000 and 6000 words.

Content of a proposal

- a provisional title, the names, affiliations and emails of all guest editors;

- a general argument (500-1000 words);

- a provisional table of contents (article title and authors);

- the abstracts of the proposed articles (300-500 words; including the author’s affiliation and email) followed by the authors’ short biographies (150 words max).

Proposals for Open Topic Articles

This section includes articles (between 6000 and 8000 words) as well as notes and short essays (1500-3000 words) that are sent for peer-reviewing. Please check the instructions for authors section and the required stylesheet.

Proposals of titles of recent scholarly books to be reviewed must be submitted to caliban-recensions@univ-tlse2.fr
