Boards and editorial process

The journal has two boards, an editorial board and a scientific board.

Editorial board

The editorial board decides on all submitted proposals. It is composed of the president of the Centre, the editor-in-chief and the head of the publication service of the French School at Athens, and it has regular meetings throughout the year.

It currently includes:

  • Anna Cannavò, HiSoMA, MOM, Lyon, editor-in-chief

  • Sabine Fourrier, HiSoMA, MOM, Lyon, president of the CEC, director of the journal

  • Bertrand Grandsagne, French School at Athens, head of the publication service of the French School at Athens

Scientific board

The scientific board includes, in addition to the director of the journal and the editor-in-chief, ex officio members, designated members who cover, through their scientific specialties, the major fields of research addressed in the journal.

It currently includes:

  • Luca Bombardieri, University of Siena

  • Artemis Georgiou, University of Cyprus

  • Thomas Kiely, British Museum, London

  • Pauline Maillard, Basel University

  • Geoffrey Meyer-Fernandez, Aix-Marseille University

  • Michalis M. Michael, University of Cyprus

  • Stephan G. Schmid, Humboldt-Universität, Berlin

  • Philippe Trélat, University of Rouen

  • Anastasia Yiangou, Cyprus Research Centre

The scientific committee has two annual meetings. It examines the articles submitted for publication, and appoints the experts responsible for evaluating them. It also examines the proposals for thematic dossiers presented by the editorial committee, and assigns the books for review.

Editorial process

Articles are either invited (within the framework of thematic dossiers), or submitted spontaneously. They are evaluated by one of the members of the scientific board (depending on his/her research field) and, systematically, by an external referee, according to the principle of single-blind peer review. Occasionally, if necessary, a second external referee can be solicited.

The anonymous reports are sent to the authors of the accepted articles, who are asked to edit their manuscript according to the indications of the referees.

Upon submission of the final version of the manuscript, the author signs a publication agreement with the editors on licensing terms. This document also specifies the author’s rights with regard to deposit in an open archive, in application of the "loi pour une République numérique" of 7 October 2016 (article 30): right to deposit the publisher’s version (PDF off-print) as soon as the volume is published, preferably on an institutional open access platform (e.g. HAL).

Publication ethics

The CCEC are firmly opposed to looting of archaeological sites and to the circulation of antiquities without provenance, in accordance with the UNESCO Convention of 14 November 1970 [link to: https://www.unesco.org/en/legal-affairs/convention-means-prohibiting-and-preventing-illicit-import-export-and-transfer-ownership-cultural]: for this reason, they do not accept any article publishing antiquities without provenance or  resulting from excavations in occupied or contested areas. Articles pertaining to collections of Cypriot antiquities declared to the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus can be published. Unprovenanced coins in circulation in the art market are also excluded from publication but they can be recorded in the “Chronique numismatique chypriote”.

The following principles of publication ethics are based on the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE (http://publicationethics.org/).

Responsibilities of the Editorial board and of the Scientific board

The editorial and scientific boards are responsible for selecting articles for publication. They are guided by the editorial and scientific policy of the CCEC, and by legal constraints (particularly regarding defamation, copyright and plagiarism). They provide guidance to guest editors, authors, reviewers and the new members of the boards on the editorial and scientific policies of the journal, and on the peer review process. They evaluate manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their scientific merit, without discrimination of any kind (ethnic, political, racial, religious, or other). They ensure that appropriate reviewers are selected, according to the requested scientific competences, and that the review process is carried out correctly, keeping confidential the identity of the experts (single-blind peer-review process). They undertake to react with the appropriate measures in the event of a complaint about an article submitted or published, in particular by publishing corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when necessary.

Guest editors’ responsibilities

Guest editors are responsible for defining the topic and role of every article in a thematic issue. They provide clear guidelines to authors regarding the topic and limitations of their contributions and the overall design of the issue. They ensure, in collaboration with the Editorial board, that appropriate reviewers are selected for the articles. They establish a timeline for draft paper submission, peer review, revision and final paper submission with the Editorial board, and they ensure that all deadlines are met. They write the introduction to the thematic issue.

Authors’ responsibilities

Authors should be aware of good publishing practices, relating to originality, objectivity and completeness of research, and the need to properly and accurately cite the work of others. Unethical practices such as knowingly inaccurate citation, plagiarism, simultaneous submission of the same manuscript elsewhere, non-citation of sources or violation of intellectual property rights are not accepted. The authors make sure to hold the necessary rights or authorisations for the publication of the illustrations accompanying their texts.

All contributors to an article must be cited, as co-authors or collaborators, in accordance with their role; funding sources should also be mentioned, if applicable. In the case of articles signed by three or more authors, one of them assumes the role of corresponding author, and undertakes to coordinate with the others during the phase of peer-review, revision and proofreading. All authors sign, during the publication phase, the authorisation document for publishers.

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editors and cooperate with them to retract or correct the manuscript.

Reviewers’ responsibilities

Peer review helps the editorial and scientific boards make editorial decisions and, through feedback to authors, can also help improve the manuscript.

Any expert who does not feel qualified or able to evaluate the manuscript which would be proposed to him (conflict of interest, conflicting relationship with the author, lack of time...), must quickly inform the editors of the journal, so that other experts can be contacted. All manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. Reviewers should report to the Editorial board if they become aware of copyright infringement or plagiarism by the author. Criticisms and comments should be conducted objectively and observations should be made clearly with supporting arguments, so that authors can use them to improve the article.

Publisher’s responsibilities

The Centre d’Études Chypriotes and the École française d’Athènes, as publishers of the CCEC, provide support to the editorial and scientific boards in the implementation of the editorial and scientific policy of the journal, and in the adoption of the editorial ethics described herein. They ensure the autonomy of editorial and scientific decisions, and monitor intellectual property issues, as well as the maintenance of good editorial practices.
