The birth of a new journal…

In 2009, three junior geographers who were conducting their PhD in a lab called “Gecko” in the University Paris-Ouest Nanterre la Défense were rolling out a new publishing space online for Geography. Their starting point was to resolve the difficult conciliation between the aim to make new research visible and the several requirements of the scientific community (assessments, format, academic writing, journal’s agenda). It has led them to start a new journal with more freedom of expression in terms of writings, formats, topics and style. The team of “Carnets de géographes” was quickly convinced that, for a geographer, one’s publication must be more than an evaluation stage, it should also be a dedicated time for debates, in order to develop epistemic, theoretical and empirical dimensions of one’s discipline.

The aim of the journal has been to create a support that could ease the transmission of new research issues, methodological question. The journal will raise diverse difficulties coming from the fieldwork and the diversity, even opposite, scientific positions.

This goal has been developed in a journal in order to escape the growing assessments which provoke the homologation and somewhere the homogenisation of our research practices. That’s why, since its publication, the journal has joined the opposition of the requirements of the national agency for research, as it was elaborated in the 2010s.

To promote cutting-edge research

The journal spreads geographical research divided into five types of publications: carnets of debates, research articles, carnets of research, fieldworks stories, books review and carnets of PhD thesis.

A blind peer review is systematic for each research article or carnet of debates.

Carnets of debates open each thematic journal with the main issues covered in the journal. This publishing space is dedicated both to experts and “junior researchers” opening new avenues on diverse cutting-edge research. This section should be the perfect place for debate, confronting viewpoints that are not supposed to lead to a consensus. This debate aims at outlining new research directions underused Reporting interviews could facilitate to express a certain freedom of expression supported by the journal.

  • Research articles bring together a series of papers (from 30 000 up to 50 000 signs) dealing with innovative researches. This section aims at shining a light on original problematics and research objects that are not deeply studied or even denied by the scientific community.

  • Fieldwork stories are designed both by the exploitation of logbooks or by methodological issues. In a reflexive way, fieldwork stories present the part of the research that is too often hidden “behind the scene”. These papers are considered as a matrix for geographical knowledge unravelling new objects, practices and discourses about the scientific research.

  • Book reviews are reports about reading, with different categories:

    • A critical viewpoint on a social science publication in French or foreign languages. The reviews about non-francophone publications are very welcome in order to reveal under-studied issues within the francophone geographical community.

    • A critical interview of an author of a recent publication

    • Non-academic productions (novels, movies, essays) will be welcome for a review

  • Carnets of PhD thesis are elaborated as a springboard for the new PhD Doctors by announcing the recent PhD defended and about Geography (dominant or related discipline). Each carnet will develop a short critical position (3 to 5 000 signs) in order to present the problematic of the research and the design of the methodology. This section opens a new opportunity to bring light to a series of research conducted by young researchers that have defended their PhD in the last two years.

Diffusion and calendar

This journal is a complete open access publication. The online medium facilitates quick processes of publication and a wide range of visual types: graphics, maps, pictures, videos and so on. Furthermore, the online medium is dedicated to a large audience, beyond the national borders.

The journal publishes two issues a year, and most of the time it is a thematic issue. However, a Varia section is permanently open to contributors.
