English version

Scheduled - as it is every year - to appear when the leaves are falling, the autumn issue of CeROArt has benefited from a flamboyant Indian summer: several colloquia and seminars have been held, providing their harvest of papers, collaborations and exchanges. The ICOM-CC Conference in Lisbon last September gathered together nearly a thousand participants for more than three hundred papers, illustrating the many different groups and specialties. An October meeting in Ottawa brought together a number of researchers and restorers on the subject of adhesives. November saw the third edition of Future Talks, devoted to contemporary materials, while the APROA Colloquium in Brussels brought up the rear, providing a forum for practitioners over the course of two particularly varied and enriching days. Particularly noteworthy was the participation of the audience not only as listeners, but also as actors. The reform of conservation-restoration courses, and the insistence on the aspect of research and communication therein, have begun to bear fruit.

An open access electronic platform, CeROArt is at the same time continuing its task of interdisciplinary dialogue and dissemination of research and practices in conservation-restoration. The concrete realities of the profession still make it difficult for independent practitioners to participate in international meetings. We continue to offer a space for the expression and investigation of practices to those conservers-restorers eager to share their experience, and sometimes also their trials and errors.

Each issue contains its share of developments. Taking part in the process of open access, and particularly in its development in the scientific and academic world, CeROArt last spring joined the Freemium package of revues.org. Together with open online access, the service will now offer commercialisation of PDF versions on international platforms (Amazon, iTunes…). This option will allow institutions to archive articles and works. We note that as of spring 2012, CeROArt will publish two new volumes in special edition. The first will be devoted to The history of restoration between 1750 and 1815; it will bring together papers presented in the framework of the seminar at the University of Geneva, which took place in October 2010. The second, Egg 2011, will reiterate the experience of the first publications of young graduates in conservation-restoration, situating this initiative in an annual effort, and the establishment of a collection.

As for the autumn issue of 2012, its theme will be the “politics of conservation-restoration”, with emphasis on the generic dimension of the term. Politics, in effect, is a matter that involves the city, citizens, living together. How does conservation-restoration appear, theoretically and practically, in civil society; how is it organised, from the secrecy of the studio to its media disclosures; how does it define its spaces of autonomy and reconcile them, at times, with interdisciplinary work; being conscious of the values of the past, how does it awaken to projects for the future… Articles (including those not pertaining to the special report) are to be submitted by 15 July 2012 at the latest.
